Craft a recipe card holder for mom’s favorite dishes — then, write a special recipe all about her!

  • Special Ingredient: Procedural writing explains how to do something step-by-step, like making a meal. Practice this skill in class on an index card — have your students write a recipe with the ingredients that make up their mother! For example, “First, take a cup of sugar and mix it into a bowl with equal parts love and patience — this makes her extra sweet!” What special ingredients and instructions will they need?
  • Taste-Tester: An extra eye is always helpful! After writing the recipes, have the class peer-review their index cards. Editing together will give students a chance to look over someone else’s procedural writing and point out things that could be missing or out of order. How can they improve their recipe to make it perfect for mom?

Procedural writing is great for strengthening attention to detail and vocabulary. Give students the chance to work as a team and try this exercise again! This time, prompt them to write the rules of their favorite recess game or directions on how to get to the playground.
