Christmas Wood Stick Train

Create your own toy train from Wood Sticks to race around your Christmas tree!

Materials


  • 25 Pack Assorted Paint Brushes
  • Glitter Fuzzy Sticks
  • Gold Glitter Glue 2.98 oz.
  • Acrylic Paint Jars, 24 Assorted colors
  • Red Pony Beads
  • Wood Beads Naturals
  • Mini Craft Sticks
  • Craft Sticks 1000 Pack
  • Craft Glue
  • Heavy Duty Scissors **May require adult assistance
  • Plastic Bottle Caps
  • Fun Wire

Instructions


Step 1. Gather your supplies.

Step 2.

Let’s first learn how to make one of the cars for the train. Begin by laying down (5) Craft Sticks side by side. Use heavy duty scissors to cut (3) pieces of Craft Sticks and glue across these sticks as shown.

Step 3.

In order to create the axle portion of the train car, you will need to add additional pieces of cut craft sticks to the top and bottom rows of the base built in Step 2.  Cut (2) additional pieces of Craft Sticks and glue in place.

Step 4.

Next you will need to make the sides of the car. Cut small ½ inch pieces of Craft Sticks. Lay down (2) Craft Sticks side by side and glue these small pieces cut to form the shape shown. Repeat to make (2) of the same shape.

Step 5.

Flip over the base piece of the car created in Step 3. Glue both side pieces of the car created in Step 4 as shown.

Step 6.

Flip this piece over again and glue on (6) Red Pony Beads onto the Craft Sticks from Step 3. Notice how these beads are glued so that the holes face each other. You will be threading a wire through the bead holes in a later step.

Step 7.

Next, you will create your wheels. First use a pencil to poke a hole through a plastic bottle cap. Repeat for all the bottle caps.

Step 8.

Glue (1) round Wood Bead to the inside of each plastic bottle cap.

Step 9.

To create an axle, thread a 5 inch piece of Fun Wire through the Pony Beads from Step 6.

Step 10.

Thread a wheel on each side of the wire through the hole poked in Step 7.

Step 11.

Coil the end of any extra wire material on each side in order to secure the wheel. Repeat for both sets of wheels. You have now made a car for your train!

Step 12.

To make the front engine, repeat Steps 2-11 to create the basic car shape. Next, use (2) Mini Craft Sticks to create the two side car shapes shown. Use small ½ inch pieces of Craft Sticks in order to secure this shape together.

Step 13.

Glue these side pieces to the side of the basic car shape.

Step 14.

Glue (10) additional Mini Craft Sticks on top and on the sides of this new portion added in Step 13.

Step 15.

On the back of the engine, create the driver’s compartment by gluing (2) Mini Craft Sticks vertically to each side then glue a Mini Craft Stick across the top of each side.

Step 16.

Complete the roof on the driver’s compartment of the engine by gluing (8) Mini Craft Sticks across the top.

Step 17.

Paint all the cars and the engine with Acrylic Paint and allow to dry.


Step 18.

Attach the train together by creating a chain out of Glitter Sticks. First create a loop around a car’s axle using a Glitter Stick.


Step 19.

Attach this Glitter Stick to another car’s axle and trim any extra Glitter Stick material.

Step 20.

Decorate your connected train with additional details as desired.  In our example, we used Glitter Glue, Acrylic Jewels and Glitter Sticks.
