Celebrate Mother’s Day in the classroom with an acrostic poetry lesson!

  • Poetry Project: An acrostic poem is a series of words or phrases displayed horizontally to describe a topic that is displayed vertically. In this craft, “Mother” is the topic and the words spelled from each letter describe her. What words will your students use to describe their mothers?
  • Describe Your Love: Before your students paint on the canvas, ask them to write out the six horizontal words or phrases they want to use. How can they expand their vocabulary? Have them search for synonyms for each word they’ve chosen — are there other words they can use instead?

Once your students master the acrostic, explore other forms of poetry! Tanka, Haiku, and Renga poems all have different rhyme patterns, word counts, and line breaks — but they can all help your students express their emotions. Challenge them to write another type of poem for Mother’s Day!
