Egyptian Inspired Plaster Tile Relief

Choose an important Egyptian symbol, such as an Egyptian God or Goddess or an image that represents a daily Egyptian routine. Draw this object onto a foam tray with a pencil.  Tip: it is important to carve deep into the foam but not break through to the other side.

Once the design is complete, mix your Plaster of Paris material together in a separate mixing container. To learn about the basics of Plaster, click here.

Pour the plaster mix into the foam tray. Plaster sets in 20-30 minutes but should be left overnight in order to fully dry.

Once dry, remove the plaster relief from the foam tray and lay on a flat surface.

Paint your design with Acrylic Paint.

Once your paint is dry, apply a layer of decoupage glue to seal in your painted design. You have just used Plaster of Paris to make a fun Egyptian Inspired Plaster Tile Relief!

The artwork of ancient Egypt (primarily the period ranging from 5000 BC to 300 AD) is mainly found inside archeological tombs and monuments and has a large emphasis on preservation of knowledge of the past and symbolic imagery of life after death. The artwork is often seen in a story-telling fashion in which pictographs depict images of daily life or symbolic figures in the form of animals and fantastical creatures that describe an important symbol or message of the time. Once you have completed a study of ancient Egypt, have your students either re-create images of important Egyptian symbols or create pictographs in the style of Egyptian artwork that discusses a moment in their own daily routine.
