Japanese Fan Art
While traditional Japanese fans are made with decorative papers and bamboo sticks, children can make their own version using paper, craft sticks and feathers as an accent.
- Paint Brushes 25 Pack Assorted Styles
- Feathers White
- Washable Paint Jars
- Jumbo Craft Sticks 300 Pack
- Construction Paper
- Craft Glue
Step 1. Gather your supplies.
Draw the fan shape shown on pink construction paper. We made a free template you can download by clicking the “template” button under the picture for this project. Download, print, cut and trace the template for the fan.
Cut out the fan shape. Tip: practice cutting skills with young children and have them cut along the lines drawn.
Paint (5) Jumbo Craft Sticks and put aside to dry.
Lay the pink fan and (2) Craft Sticks in the position shown on a piece of blue construction paper. Do not glue down yet! Trace the outside of the craft stics for placement.
Remove the pink fan shape. Starting at each end, glue the (2) craft sticks down to the construction paper, using the lines you traced as a guide. Next Glue the middle piece, so that it overlaps the 2 side pieces. And finally glue the 2 inside pieces, so that they overlap the middle piece, as shown.
Glue your fan piece onto the craft sticks.
Glue White Feathers into the fan. Tip: Add glue to the fan first then press the feathers into the glue.
