Waterlily Art with Blending Techniques

To make the background, pour different hues of blue and white paint on a plate. Choose a round, stiff bristle brush and mix the blues and white together slightly.  Paint large wavy brush strokes on the card stock to mimic waves in the water.

Continue painting wavy, overlapping brush strokes until the whole paper is covered. Allow to dry.

You will now learn a fun painting technique. Pour dark pink, and light pink Paint on the plate. Using a flat angled brush, dip the left edge of the brush in the dark pink paint, as shown.

Dip the right side of the brush in the light pink paint.

Start with a piece of white card stock. To make a petal for the waterlily flower, place your brush on the paper and paint a stroke, moving upward in an arch, as shown. This will create a brush stroke that is dark pink on the left and light pink on right.

Rotate the brush in your hand, so that the light pink is now on the left and the dark pink is on the right. Starting at the top of the previous brush stroke, paint a stroke moving down, and arching to finish the petal. In just two steps you have created a fun blended look to your petals.

Fill in the inside of the petal with the light pink.

Continue painting petals using this technique to complete the flower. Make larger petals at the top and smaller petals around the bottom.

To make the lily pad, load your brush with some yellow and green paint using the technique taught in steps 4 and 5. Make curved strokes at either side of the base of the flower, making sure to flip your paintbrush to follow the same technique used on the flower petals.

Finish painting in the lily pad, using both green and yellow for a two tone look.

Paint 3 more waterlilies on the same card stock.

Cut the flowers out and glue them to the water background to complete your painting.
