  • All-Star: Jackie Robinson always aspired to be in sports — in college, he became a 4-time varsity athlete in basketball, football, tennis, and baseball! What sports do your students play? What inspired them to join?
  • Equal Playing Field: Mr. Robinson was the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers! Because American sports were segregated, many fans and teammates weren’t welcoming — but that didn’t stop Robinson. He leveled the playing field for other African-American athletes who wanted to be on teams that were prejudiced against them.

We remember trailblazers like Jackie Robinson to honor the work they did to give everyone equal opportunities. As a class, come up with a list of influential Black men and women in sports. For an extra credit assignment, have your students share reports on the people they find inspiring!
