Guest Post: Hand Lettered Word of the Year Canvas

The following is a Guest Post from Amy Latta Creations, a member of our Craft Project Ideas Blogger Network!

December is the perfect time for crafting, whether it’s gifts, holiday decorations, or even a project to help ring in the new year! I’m Amy, from Amy Latta Creations, and I’m excited to be here today to share a fun and easy project that kids of all ages will enjoy as we get ready for 2019.

Lots of folks like to come up with a special word each December that expresses their hopes or goals for the year to come. We’re going to use that idea and create a colorful hand lettered canvas that kids can hang in their room, their locker, or anywhere they like to remind them of their word. Grownups, don’t be afraid to join the fun too! Here’s what you’ll need.

Instructions

Choose your word.

Step  1.

This might be the hardest step of all. Think about what kind of year you hope to have, and what kind of person you want to be. One year, my personal goal was to be more brave, so I chose the word, “fearless.” If you struggle with worries, you might want to focus on the word, “peace.” If you sometimes find yourself getting angry quickly, your word might be, “calm” or “joy.” Whatever you choose, it should be personal to you and something that you want to reflect on in the year to come.

Step  2.

Write your word in pencil in the center of the canvas.

Leave a little bit of extra space in between your letters.

Step  3.

Go back and draw a second line on every downstroke.

So, what’s a downstroke? Whenever we write, our pencil is moving either up, down, or horizontally. A downstroke is simply anywhere your pencil was moving down toward you when you were writing.

Here’s a sample alphabet to show you where those double lines go.

Step  4.

Trace your pencil lines with permanent marker. Then, paint inside the double lines any way you like!

You can use the same color as your outline, a new color, or even create a multi-colored pattern in that space. The only limit is your imagination.

Paint the pre-printed frame around the edges of the canvas.

Now you have a colorful handmade reminder of your special word. Make sure to display it where you can see it often as a reminder.
