From ancient Greece to your own backyard, explore the history behind the symbolic Olympic torch and race with it!

  • A Long-Held Tradition: A sacred fire burned during the first Olympic Games in Greece as an homage to the gods — specifically Prometheus, who supposedly stole fire to give to humans. The lit torch symbolizes civilization and human achievement!
  • Hot Take: The relay of the Olympic torch began in the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. During this tradition, the torch starts in Olympia, Greece, and travels to the host city with the help of runners, planes, trains, and other modes of transportation.

Create your own Olympic relay race! Take your finished craft stick torches outside and break into teams of 3-4. Have each student pass off their torches after each lap for a friendly competition to see which team finishes first!
